Union Chapel
London
Step into Union Chapel on any given day and you might find this majestic Victorian Gothic-era structure holding a sermon or acting as a haven for the homeless. Some nights, however, Union Chapel gets a makeover and bursts into melodic life as it plays host to a variety of acts, bands and one-off shows.
Originally becoming a local benchmark for organising acoustic nights and the occasional jazz show, it has since been recognised as an award-winning music venue and quickly gained a reputation for attracting creative, thinking bands and singers. With such grandiose surroundings – and sometimes for a charitable cause – it is easy to see why artists raise the bar when playing here. Tim Minchin, Jens Lekman, Tom Jones, Patti Smith and other leading musicians have all plied their trade in this famous setting.
Whether you are seated high up in the heavens (the tier overlooking the stage) or amongst the pews, experiencing Union Chapel will top that of any air-conditioned and characterless modern-day music venue. Check out the site's 'events' page for further details on upcoming acts.
