Lahore
London
There's fine dining, and then there's Lahore. While we don't mean to imply that it's the culinary equivalent of fast food, the efficiency of service and the sheer unpretentiousness of the operation is the antithesis of the cloth napkin establishment. Lahore is a kebab and grill house over in Whitechapel, and feels very much like a neighbourhood affair. Locals from the resident Asian community mix it up with the odd group of office workers and foodies who have been turned on to the quality of cooking and the happily relaxed atmosphere.
If God himself had created the perfect place for curry and grills, it would not look like your battered but well-meaning local curry house. It would look and taste like Lahore. Long tables quickly fill up with hungry diners and a queue quickly forms of those who know that it's worth the wait. The food is excellent. The food is cooked Pakistani-style and the quality of the grills alone is worth the wait. Curries are spicy and very high quality, a perfect balance of heat, walloping savoury flavour and delicate seasonings, while the lamp chops are in exercise in frank perfection. Chicken curry on the bone is as good as it gets, while dry lamb curry is intensely flavoursome. There's a selection of familiar varieties of curry, but order a few things off the specials menu for variety.
Service is abrupt, quick and efficient - don't expect smiles and hugs, but at these price points it's a minor quibble.
