Description
The Old Royal Naval College is a historic site located in Greenwich, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has over 600 years of history and was the birthplace of Henry VIII. The college is also the UK’s leading heritage film location.
The Painted Hall, often called the UK's Sistine Chapel, is included with your ticket. An audio guide is available in seven languages (English, French, Spanish, Italian, Mandarin, German, Japanese) plus British Sign Language. Painted Hall talks run every 30 minutes from 11am to 4pm.
Until 20 January 2025, Luke Jerram’s installation Mars is exhibited in the Painted Hall. This seven-metre diameter model displays detailed NASA imagery of Mars, rotating slowly with an original soundtrack by BAFTA and Ivor Novello winner Dan Jones.
Tickets include an optional historical tour departing hourly from the Visitor Centre between 11am and 3pm (subject to availability). This tour covers the site's history as Greenwich Palace, birthplace to Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I. Admission also grants access to the Visitor Centre, Chapel, and Victorian Skittle Alley (usually open 12pm–3pm) where you can try traditional bowling.
The college buildings and grounds have featured in films and series such as The Crown, Les Misérables, Napoleon, and Bridgerton. You can book a film tour to explore filming locations and behind-the-scenes stories.
For best experience, arrive early to join tours and visit the Painted Hall before the last entry at 4:30pm. Check opening times for the Skittle Alley on arrival.
