Description
Meet your guide, Rah, a local to Brixton and Stockwell. He will provide personal stories and insight on your Unseen Tours journey through the South London urban areas of Brixton and Stockwell.
Unseen Tours is a not-for-profit social enterprise. Our mission is to support and empower vulnerable individuals with experience of homelessness, through providing the opportunity to become a tour guide which boosts their confidence and amplifies their voices. Our brilliant guides know the local streets intimately and will show you the real London through their stories and unmatched knowledge of the area’s history. Your ticket helps our guides to earn a living doing something that they love, with the majority of our sales going back directly to them. It also allows our guides to lead conversations that challenge perceptions about homelessness and generate social change.
On this tour, you will discover some of the cultures and communities in Brixton and Stockwell, and learn how they have shaped and contributed to the local areas. You will also explore local transport history, resident celebrities, and hidden gems along the way. Rah will also share part of his personal experience of homelessness, providing deeper insight and encouraging a changed perception of social issues.
Hear more from Rah himself: 'My name is Rah, I am originally from the Stockwell area and have lived in and outside London for many years until returning a few years ago to care for my ailing parents until their passing in 2023.
I have experienced homelessness many times, from since the age of 16 when the staff at the children’s care home where I lived said that I had to leave and didn’t give me any advice on applying for housing, right up until a few years ago when I was sanctioned for failing to a hit a target of job applications per week which led to my eviction.
I have since been housed in my current flat but have suffered mental and physical health problems, work and relationship instability due to past homelessness, precarious housing and constant moving. I have hearing loss and wear a hearing aid on my right ear and have a long-term colorectal ulcer condition which requires intermittent access to toilets and may affect timekeeping and scheduling, causing general interruptions to my life. I am learning to lipread to make it easier to follow conversations and understand people in noisy environments and general settings.'
