Description

Swap the city rush for a micro-adventure on the River Thames in Richmond. With Back of Beyond Adventures, you’ll book a kayak and set off on a self-guided paddle through calm backwaters, hidden islands, and peaceful riverside stretches—less than 20 minutes from central London by train. Start at River Lane in Petersham with a (re)introduction to paddling, plus guidance on where to go. You’ll be provided with the key kit you need for the water, including a dry bag to carry essentials like a towel, snacks, phone, and wallet. You'll need to choose your craft in advance—single kayak, or tandem—and launch into your adventure at a time that suits you. A suggested route takes you paddling toward Twickenham to explore the Thames’ islands and backwaters, with the option to moor up for a quick drink at a paddle-friendly riverside pub. Keep an eye out for kingfishers and other river wildlife as you cruise along at your own pace. After your stop, return to Petersham Meadows and River Lane to hand back your kayak and equipment. Finish your day with a picnic on Petersham Meadows or head to Petersham Nurseries for afternoon tea—an easy, outdoorsy escape right on London’s doorstep.
