Billingsgate Fish Market is the UK’s largest wholesale inland fish market – where 25 000 tons of fish and fish products are sold on average through the year. The market is open to the general public. The daily arrival of fish from the coast and abroad guarantees a constant flow of unbelievably fresh produce. With a number of merchants selling their wares, the competition is very keen.
In addition to the many fish and fish products on sale here, the market also offers other products such as poultry, cooking oils, potatoes, trade sundries and specialist restaurant and catering supplies, adding to the all round market experience. Although many of the stalls sell mainly wholesale, quite a few of them do sell retail – but be prepared to buy quite a lot. You can indeed buy for example one crab or one large lobster, but much of the produce is sold in boxes. It’s definitely worth going with a few friends and dividing up the 'catch' at the end of the day – alternatively make sure your freezer is empty before making your way to this market, as there are many deals to be had!
Billingsgate Market is a place that should be visited at least once in a lifetime – even if you’re not that keen on fish, or getting up at 5am in the morning - the experience is something else and well worth it!
The stalls are open from 05:00 – 8:30 every Tuesday - Saturday. The market is also open on a Sunday but on a much smaller scale with Sunday being a mainly shellfish day.
