Barrica
London
It's known predominantly as a sit-down tapas restaurant, but Barrica's sherry bar is no slouch. Listing at least 14 different sherries in addition to a strong selection of Spanish wines, the drinking here is as good as the eating - if you've ever tried any of the dishes at Barrica, you'll immediately understand what we mean.
Wines are listed separately, and offer an introduction to the vastly underrated Iberian white wines and grape varieties - it offers particular emphasis on the aromatic Albarinos and elegant Godellos. In contrast the more familiar reds are listed by character. Sherries are a particular delight, and in addition to the familiar finos and manzanillas, and we were delighted to see the delicious and rare Palo Cortado on the list. Wines and sherries are served by 100ml and 375ml measures as well as by the bottle, and both front-of-house and management are extremely enthusiastic - an additional high point to an already-burgeoning list of memorable attributes.
Of course, tapas are on offer - creamy patatas bravas, juicy albondigas (meatballs) and simply but perfectly grilled squid make excellent accompaniments to a meal here. Casual but romantic, bring a date or bring friends but be prepared for the eventuality that you may want to order everything on the menu.
