The Hat and Tun
London
It's got to be the overwhelming 'oldy-woldy' (a British phrase to mean attractively old-fashioned) appeal of the place that draws so many people in. Wood plank floors, dark-wood wall sections, the wall-mounted heads of various game beasts - boar, deer etc. - roaring fires and big, cosy Chesterfields abound in the Hat and Tun (if you're wondering what a 'tun' is, it's a big beer or wine barrel).
Food and drink here is beautifully English as well. Pie and mash, fish and chips, a Ploughman's lunch or plain and simple beef sandwiches are on the menu and, over at the bar, a good selection of real ales are available by the pintful.
The atmosphere at this place is just really relaxing and friendly. However, if you want to accelerate things a bit, they also cater for weddings, private parties and private dining.
Finally, every Monday is quiz night. Bring a couple of quid along with you, chuck your money in the collection bowl and, who knows, you might have won the £100 bar tab they set up for the quiz's grand prize.
Opening times: Monday - Thursday: 12:00 - 23:30, Friday: 12:00 - 01:00, Saturday - Sunday: private parties until 01:00.
