The Troubadour
London
It's really hard to dislike the Troubadour. The South Kensington location can initially be offputting - for museums and chichi restaurants, sure, but for live music and stiff pours? Not exactly what most people would have in mind. Located on Brompton road, the bar is an enclave of music lovers, appreciators of art and culture and those with a reverence for history. The murky signage hints at very little, but the eccentric decorations inside - denoting little more than an independent coffee joint and brunch spot - are a further clue.
Downstairs is where the magi c happens though. A small central stage and an adjoining bar anchor a set of sprawling tables and booths where regulars in a laid-back crowd pull up to see rock, blues, indie and jazz acts giving it their best. The smell of history permeates. The coffee shop upstairs is also a terrific place for food as well - we've had some excellent all-day breakfasts, and we've heard the kitchen has the dubious honour of knocking out a terrific eggs Benedict.
