Two Floors
London
Everyone needs a backup. When your best friend has drunk too much, his girlfriend's moaning that she doesn't want to go anywhere with loud music and the unbearable couple in the corner don't want to go somewhere too 'clubby', there aren't many better places to head than Two Floors. In fact, if we had to narrow down our partying options in Soho to three, this would make the shortlist.
Unfussy, unpretentious with great beers, laid-back but friendly bartenders and a stripped down but great selection of cocktails and premium spirits, it's very hard to dislike this discreet bar off Kingly Court. Camden Brewery supplies the draught, while an easy-drinking but good selection of bottles (it was one of the first bars to stock Brooklyn Brewery) is proffered, Modelo being the house favourite. The crowd is overwhelmingly young, mid-twenties and local professional but usually friendly and laid-back, while the music choice eschews the usual brash top 40 for a bartender-selected mix - we've heard everything from Pearl Jam to Massive Attack and DJ Shadow on past visits. By day, it becomes a quiet, shaded hub for local creatives to work and reflect.
Downstairs is a bookable Tiki Bar, which is useful for low-key private events, complete with ramshackle walls, barrel-topped tables and glowing red lamps. The Soho backstreet location is also a draw, meaning you can step outside with your drink and catch a little of the spirited London night air.
