Evocative, emblematic and iconic, for years the Houses of Parliament have taken the pride of place on many a travel article and visitor's London photo collection. And rightly so - powerful and majestic at any time of day, the perpendicular Gothic style of the building shines the brightest when it is lit up at night.
The Houses of Parliament are the political centre and meeting place of the two houses of Parliament in the UK, the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
Big Ben, the name given to the massive bell struck every 15 minutes within the belfry, has now come to be the name given to the entire clocktower.
Tours are available inside the Houses, offering views of the chambers and debate rooms where Britain's political elite and decision makers battle it out. It's possible to attend debates, watch committees and, if you're a UK national, climb the tower. The artistry and attention to details within the building are impeccable, and works of art and inscriptions litter the interior.
Be aware that security and entry into the Houses are as stringent as any airport. Be prepared to queue for the more popular tours and rooms within the building.
