ZSL London Zoo

London

Family Fun

ZSL London Zoo has been open to the public for 165 years, making it the oldest zoo of its kind - scientific - in the world. Indeed, it was originally planned to simply be a place for scientific collection and study, but swiftly turned into a popular enough attraction for London's and the world's people.

Today, the zoo houses over 700 different species of animal with the ever-crowd-attracting group of penguins, majestic tigers and stocky gorillas. Other highlights are the pygmy hippos, Komodo dragons, giraffes and reindeer. With such variety and wonderment available at London Zoo, it's an awesome place to come for the day for small families and couples. School trips are also a winner but, of course, all are welcome.

As you'd probably expect, there are plenty of things going on at the zoo every day in the form of events, exhibitions, showcases and interactions. Start the day at 11:15 or your afternoon at 13:00 by handling some creepy crawlies in the Megabugs exhibit; watch falconry and other birds of prey at midday; at 14:30 go check out what the penguins are up to with Penguin Beach Live; or watch the lions get their share of meat if you'd rather not feast your eyes on the hairiest, most horrifying bird-eating spider - both these events start at 15:00.

Penguin Beach Live: A Special Mention

ZSL London Zoo’s newest exhibit, Penguin Beach, is England’s largest penguin pool and home to three different penguin species.

Holding more than 450,000 litres of water, with underwater viewing areas, it even has an adjoining baby pool ready for baby penguins who aren’t quite ready for the big pool.

The new exhibit is the new home of ZSL London Zoo’s world-famous penguin feed. Penguin Beach Live takes places daily and visitors can learn lots of fun facts about the feathered creatures, whilst watching as they leap and dive in the water to get to their favourite snack: fish!

Feeding time for the penguins has been a feature of the Zoo for more than 100 years, with even the Queen stopping by as a young girl to watch the penguins line up for their dinner.
