The Golden Hind
London
The Golden Hind, taking its name from the old English sea galleon which circumnavigated the globe in the late 1500s. The ship was captained by Sir Francis Drake.
Nowadays, The Golden Hind is a fish and chip shop in Marylebone and it dishes out some of the best platefuls of haddock, cod, skate and scampi this side of the Thames. Prices start at around £5 for a small haddock and gently increase to £12 for the halibut steak. Whatever you choose, though, you won't be disappointed thanks to amount of taste, body and texture that's packed into every plate-filling portion.
Honestly, The Golden Hind isn't just a wrap-up-and-go chippie. You can sit down and tuck into a humongous slab of fried fish with the crunchiest of batters and softest insides, slap on some mushy peas which are served by the bucketful, and enjoy chips the size of building blocks whose insides are as fluffy as clouds. Oh, and don't forget the mayonnaise for dipping. Chips and mayonnaise should never be separated.
