Daunt Books
London
While Foyles is comprehensive and reliable, Daunt Books feels intimate and personable. Ostensibly a travel bookstore, it offers a wonderful range of travel fiction, guides, language references and maps along with a well-chosen selection of biography, fiction, short stories and poetry. Gorgeous and dark, polished woods along with stacked shelves of books mean that it has the warm feel of a neighbourhood bookstore, with super-friendly and knowledgeable service to boot. After a series of lingering moments browsing the shelves and leafing through their books you might well come to the conclusion that if they didn’t have it, it probably wouldn’t be worth reading anyway.
The Marylebone store – the original – is the best of the lot. A three-storey wonder, the Edwardian design with its painted green walls, concisely stacked shelves and conservatory ceiling is nothing short of elegance personified. If Audrey Hepburn’s character in Funny Face worked at any bookstore in London, she’d probably work here. An establishment to be cherished.
