The Crown and Greyhound
London
We’re going to cut straight to chase with this one: the beer garden here is awesome. It’s more like the kind of public space you’d find at a park or the grounds of some stately home (just with the noise of traffic whooshing past). It’s bordered by sections of green fencing into which segmented window panes have been cut. It’s also got a roof – of sorts – in the form of the great overhanging branches of a giant oak tree. This does mean the whole place is strewn with fallen leaves, and not that great just after rainfall. But when the sun’s out, it’s a great place to cool off in the shade of the tree and enjoy what The Crown and ‘Hound’s menu provides.
And provide it does. The weekday menu sees such delights as Gloucester Old Spot sausages – always a favourite – rib eye with fries; West Country beef burger; beer-battered haddock and chips; and a dribble-inducing sharing platter consisting of cured meats, scotched quail’s eggs, olives, bread and oil. They also do brunches, Sunday lunches and set menus for when you can’t decide.
The Crown and ‘Hound is the perfect spot to come with friends or for a family lunch at the weekend. It’s close to Dulwich College in southeast London, Herne Hill tube stop and Dulwich Picture Gallery, making it a great focal point, and an ‘out-of-the-touristy-bit-of-London’ hot-spot.
