The Jolly Gardeners
London
This is another of those pubs that only exists if you know about. It might not be on the lips of many if you stop and ask for a nearby Putney pub but, if you’re out for the day at the London Wetland Centre, you can get to The Jolly Gardeners from there easily; just hop on the Barnes Bridge mainline train, go two stops to Putney and Lacy Road is off the High Street on the left towards the bridge.
Speaking of bridges, the River Thames flows through the back garden of The Jolly Gardeners (well, almost), allowing for a great opportunity to take a stroll along its banks either before or after a quick drink or a bite to eat.
However, should you be able to tear yourself away from The Jolly Gardeners, we’d like to stop you and ask why, because this pub is like a playground for adults. Apart from the selection of great food and drink on offer (they recommend the crab and salmon fishcakes and, for Sunday roast, the beef), there are board games where you can relive your childhood, and something else that it prides itself on: its garden.
Being on the banks of the river, there’s a beautifully-relaxing view to behold. Also the front garden has been lovingly adorned with lush hanging baskets and trailing vines all around the windows and doors. With plenty of heating and shelter from the elements, The Jolly Gardeners’ garden really delivers a pleasant atmosphere in which to eat and drink in comfort.
Opening Times: Monday – Saturday: 12:00 – 23:00, Sunday: 12:00 – 22:30
