As subtly implied by its name, Vertigo 42 is a bar-in-the-sky kind of place. It’s a reservations-only champagne bar located conveniently at the top of the Natwest Tower in the City, surveying all of London before it. As with similarly located establishments, you’re required to pass through security checks and confirm your reservation before being whisked up 42 levels of skyscraper to the bar – not necessarily romantic, but an experience in itself.

The bar itself is decked out in a questionably kitsch Jetsons-esque magenta and purple colour scheme that feels like it hasn’t been updated since 1989. There’s a minimum £10 spend per person – but you already knew that, and you’re likely to be expecting to pay a pretty penny for the privilege.

But what a view. Dates, special occasions, engagements – all is forgotten when you’re plumped down in a comfy seat with a loved one and staring across the London night sky.
