Ever fancied nibbling on a crocodile fillet, chowing down some kangaroo steak, or crunching up a salad full of exotic bugs? You can do all that and more at London's restaurant-cum-jungle feast venue, Archipelago. We'll say this before we go any further, though: the place is one for celebrations and special occasions because the prices are that bit higher than average.
However, you won't catch a dining experience quite like it anywhere else in the city. The food here is just plain unusual. Zebra, wildebeest, springbok and bison are all options, as well as more mundane choices like chicken and fish. It's all served unusually, too. 'Croc on a Rock' is, as the name suggests, crocodile meat served on a smooth slab of stone. Other platters include chunks of wood and fancy wicker plates.
The serving apparatus is a reflection of the interior design. It's like being in the jungle inside an ancient Aztec ruin. Sort of. Palm fronds line the walls and Buddhas sit happily throughout the place. It's dark inside and bathed by warm glows.
But, for those who can stomach platefuls of exotic meats, Archipelago is somewhere you have to go. If anything, go for the experience. You'll be lucky to find anywhere else in London whose menus are rolled up tea-stained parchments with singed edges; it's like going out for a picnic with Indiana Jones.
