Richmond Park
London
Size: 2500 acres
Richmond is the largest of London's Royal Parks and, thanks to its enormity, doesn't have the densely-populated 'touristy' atmosphere of its royal counterparts. You can come here and literally spend the day walking in a line without reaching the point at which you started (unless you turn around).
Richmond Park offers a respite for visitors with its huge expanses of rolling hillsides, open grasslands, secluded woodlands, ponds and gardens all set against a backdrop of gnarled and ancient trees.
As far as the park's wildlife goes, there's known to be a 650-strong mob of red and fallow deer; the park used to be a hunting ground for the royals. As well as this, there are two shire horses which belong to the park, who are called Billy and Massey. They're used in maintaining the park's grounds. Visitors, particularly children, can visit the two horses.
On the east side of the park are two 18-hole golf courses, a 16 bay driving range and a pro shop. The courses are on a 'pay and play' policy and all abilities are welcome.
Nearest Tube: Richmond Station (District Line)
