Housed in a glorious grade II Victorian listed building - meat has been passing through these doors for over 800 years, making this London's oldest market. Meat, poultry, cheese, pies and delicatessen goods are available for wholesale here which understandably attracts large crowds of butchers, restaurateurs and caterers. Most of the best restaurants and hotels buy their meats here and the site is known for the quality of product available.
The large central avenues running through the market allow customers to stroll through the market. If you want to get any closer to the products you'll need to dress up appropriately in clean protective gear.
This market is not for the faint hearted, as you'll need to be up fairly early to capture the essence of Smithfields. The market opens at 4am every morning and is basically all over by 8am. A visit to this market is all about soaking up the atmosphere - and stopping in for a pint and the papers at a local pub on the way out!
