Beatroot is a an absolute God-send to vegetarians, especially those working around the Soho area. Why? Simply because people can pop in on their lunch hour, get a boxfull of scrummy nosh, cram the lid on and head off within minutes of stepping through the door.
Beatroot is as casual as it is colourful as it is friendly. Indeed, it prides itself on these qualities as much as it does its menu - which, by the way, is tremendous but we'll get to that in a second. First we want to divulge how Beatroot churns out such appeased customers so quickly and so consistently: it's their display-and-prepare model. There are ten hot dishes on display, as well as ten cold salads (we advise against mixing the two if you have to walk somewhere before eating. Once the two temperatures combine, you end up with a soggy mess). You make a choice, they box it up for you in either a small, medium, or large container, jam it shut - sometimes taping it down with a sticker to secure the lid in place - and send you on your way. Sound good? It is.
What can you fill your box with?
Popular choices - which are normally meat-based but have been manipulated to form gorgeous veggie options - are herb-strong, soya mince sausage rolls, curry, hot pot, or pasta bake as a hot dish. By way of salads there's basil pasta, carrot salad, potato salad or Greek salad (Feta, tomato, cucumber, olives and red onion) to name but a few.
Liquidise that food!
They do juices and smoothies here too. All the drinks have their own creative names which reflect the ingredients used to make them. The ABC, for example, contains apple, beetroot, and carrot. The Detox is carrot, ginger and wheatgrass. The Sunshine is mango, orange and banana. While the Blue Moon is berries, banana, apple and vanilla milk.
Beatroot has a real class of its own with the cocktail-esque smoothies, the neatness of the menu, the simplicity of the entire joint. It all boils down to ease and enjoyment from, and for, all.
