Fifteen - Jamie Oliver
London
Jamie Oliver's Fifteen shines because of its work ethic. It pulls in the young and unemployed and puts them on the road to a successful job. Working on an apprentice scheme as well as producing quality dishes for customers, the staff at Fifteen are trained to be confident professionals.
Descend into the restaurant via a set of delicately-lit wooden stairs. A spiral chandelier whose light is set ablaze by the surrounding smooth black walls hangs in front of a wall-covering mirror which opens up what could have been an enclosed and tight-fitting area. Round the corner and you're greeted by dozens of jazzy silver chairs placed round darkened tables. At the far end of the room, more modern furnishings abound in the form of a bare-brick wall and low-hanging fan lights. Meanwhile the spotlit main ceiling creates gentle brightness which reflects off the glossy side walls and glassware. The staff here are evidently sure of themselves thanks to the length of open kitchen behind which they work
The taste of Italy drives the menu of Fifteen so pastas, risottos and quality vegetable side-dishes are ever-popular. Antipasti dishes include slices of cold Cumbrian pork; crusty rustic bread and olive oil for dipping; salads and, of course, mozzarella. A selection of classic pasta dishes such as tagliatelle and linguine are on offer, as well as gnocchi and ravioli. Other mains consist of seared trout fillet; salted pollock; char-grilled Thirsk lamb; and braised Cumbrian pork shoulder. The sweets come in the form of refreshing fruit-based dishes like raspberry and vanilla mouse or grilled peaches. Ice-cream with mixed berry coulis and a selection of seasonal cheeses also make for perfect after dinner accompaniments.
