At first glance, the name of the Rootmaster Bustaurant seems a little verbose, perhaps a bit arcane too. You look again and roll your eyes. Very droll. And then, you discover what it's all about and you begin to think 'actually that's quite clever'. Serving a variety of vegan and vegetarian cuisine (this is the 'root' part) in a refurbished and modified old red London routemaster bus (the bustaurant bit), this popular venue serves healthy 'fare' that is just the 'ticket' for vegans and vegetarians.
The Rootmaster Bustaurant is located at Elys Yard on Hanbury Street in the heart of London, near to the Old Truman Brewery and boasting al fresco dining on the large open courtyard out front. In the lower deck, there is an open-plan kitchen that puts the talented and hard-working kitchen staff on show, accompanied by a service hatch and standing-room only dining - perfect for a quick bite with friends or colleagues. Upstairs there is seating for 28 diners, panoramic views and - pleasingly, for a London bus - a distinct lack of graffiti, rowdy schoolkids or annoying mobile ring tones. For the most part, anyway.
The friendly staff at the Rootmaster Bustaurant are eager to ensure all diners enjoy first class service and top class cuisine each visit. The menu is based predominately on Asian and European dishes, with specials worthy of note including the Pizza Tart, the gyoza and teriyaki and the stunning Tofu Tower, not to mention plenty of salads and vegetarian versions of classic dishes. The bustaurant is open from 11am to 11pm Monday to Saturday, and from 11am to 10.30pm on Sundays.
