Laphet, Covent Garden A genuinely well-executed Burmese menu — a cuisine still under-represented in London, and this kitchen does it justice. The flavour profile occupies a fascinating middle ground between Indian and Malay cooking: the depth of spice and slow-cooked richness you'd associate with South Asian curries, layered with the brightness, acidity, and fresh herb-forward quality typical of Malay/Southeast Asian food — think fermented and pickled notes (a nod to the restaurant's namesake, laphet, the fermented tea leaf salad that's a Burmese staple) balanced against warmer, spice-driven mains. Textures were well contrasted throughout — crunchy fried lentils and garlic against tender braised meats, fresh herbs cutting through richer curries. Seasoning was confident and layered rather than one-note, and nothing felt like a compromise for a Western palate. Service was knowledgeable and paced the meal well, happy to guide us through less familiar dishes. A strong, distinctive addition to Covent Garden's dining scene — recommended for anyone curious about Burmese food or looking for something that doesn't taste like everything else on the street.
We went for dinner for Mum’s birthday. We didn’t go with the highest hopes as relatives said certain dishes weren’t that great but I think they were comparing it to how we make it at home. The Ohn No Kauk Swe was equally as tasty as how we cook but obviously different - which is what you want. You don’t want to eat something you can get at home. I got the braised beef curry which I truly recommend - really good portion size and very tasty. If you like spice get yourself a side of Balachaung (fried chilli/garlic/shrimp paste). Atmosphere was great we sat on the roof terrace with a beautiful view. Staff are friendly and service was great. Will definitely be back.
This was my second time eating at a branch of Lahpet, having previously visited their Shoreditch branch late last year. I had the beef, with mashed potatoes. I’d never tried mashed potatoes quite like theirs, they were flavourful and unique. The beef was tender, and the curry sauce was delicious. For dessert, I had the ice cream, which was zesty and refreshing. I also had the crème brûlée, which had tapioca balls at the bottom - again, really unique flavour. The service was amazing, and one of our servers (I didn’t get her name) was especially lovely. It’s a great option if you’re in the area, and particularly if you have allergies. The menu is very good for gluten free - everything is labelled properly, and the staff were accommodating with my allergies (nuts, wheat/gluten). I’d happily recommend Lahpet - especially if you’re celebrating a special occasion like a birthday!
Absolutely gorgeous. Insane flavours, great menu, and the staff were lovely. We went on a friday night without a booking and didn’t have to wait for a table. They have space to sit outside and it was perfect. The pandan creme brulee was one of the best things i’ve ever eaten, with a sago surprise at the bottom. Stunning!
We would have given this restaurant five stars, but the service unfortunately ruined our experience. None of the staff at the restaurant were attentive. We always had to flag them down whenever we wanted to order something. We also had a female server who behaved very strangely. When we ordered desserts, she simply came over my wife’s shoulder and quickly tossed our cutlery and napkins on the corner of table next to my wife and walked away without saying anything. Later, when we asked for the bill, she did the same with the bill. It felt like she was trying to avoid us. However, the food was excellent. It was our first time trying Burmese food and we loved it. The catfish noodle soup bowl was the best introduction to Burmese cuisine that I could have hoped for. In fact, it’s one of the best noodle soup bowl that I’ve had to date. I also loved the restaurant’s take on crème brûlée. Again, it was the one of the best crème brûlée I’ve tasted. The chicken noodle soup bowl and fried dough dessert were decent. If the restaurant could improve their service, this restaurant could be one of the finest in the city.
