Zafferano
London
A Michelin-starred London institution in upmarket Mayfair, the cooking is Italian cuisine of the highest order.
The kitchen is headed up chef Andy Needham, and though the food is deceptively uncomplicated, the ingredients are very fresh, some even being flown in from Italy the morning of service.
The menu is a familiar mix of Italianate sections - antipasti, pastas, grills etc. - however, ingredients and combinations are innovative and thoughtful. The pastas are particularly good, and the kitchen is very strong on seafood, though you would be hard pressed to find anything on the menu that wasn't superlative.
The interior is relaxed and smart, though not stuffy, and service is warm, professional and attentive.
The wine list, though excellent, can make dinner here eye-wateringly expensive. The lunch menu is better value and more wallet friendly, and will afford you a flavour of the kitchen's talents at a fraction of the price.
